Early Intervention
The diagnosis of an infant's hearing loss is difficult for parents
and families. Our Early Intervention Programs offer a warm, supportive
atmosphere where parents learn about their child's hearing loss
and how it will impact the family.
As we support parents through this challenge, we guide them in
their role as a child's first and most important teachers of language.
Specially trained speech/language pathologists and teachers of the
deaf provide individual sessions for children, newborn through age
six, even after they have mainstreamed into neighborhood schools.
Since our focus is on the specific needs of the family, one hour
private sessions take place in the family home or other appropriate
setting once or twice a week.
SJI is dedicated to the development of the whole child. Children
ages two and three are able to engage in daily Toddler classes that
encourage age appropriate growth in social, motor, self-help and
cognitive skills. Hearing peer models are enrolled in class to help
prepare children with hearing impairments for future mainstream
settings, increase language stimulation and provide natural play
settings in small groups. Families with children in the Toddler
class also continue to meet for private sessions.
