Mainstream Programs
Mainstreaming for a hearing-impaired child begins at infancy with
the family.
From there, it is a continuous process of ever-broadening participation
in the
world. St. Joseph Institute contributes by empowering hearing-impaired
children
to pursue their educational and social potential by helping them
develop
communication, academic and personal skills.

Academic Mainstreaming
The primary goal at SJI is to transition each student to full-time
enrollment in a mainstream school. Many of our students academically
mainstream at an early age
due to advances in assistive technology, early intervention and
the quality of our
program.
To further guide this vital step, mainstreaming also is an academic
program. Students typically enter the program when judged by their
parents and the school to be one
or two years away from full-time inclusion.
While students reach this stage at different points, the mainstream
program provides
a guided academic and social transition plan. The plan may include
partial academic placement in a mainstream school while education
at St. Joseph Institute continues
with several academic subjects, daily speech therapy and access
to support services.
If a child is recommended for partial academic placement, our mainstream
coordinator provides IEP development, in-services of mainstream
faculty, classroom observation
and tutoring.
