Academic Programs

Full-Day School

The full-day school provides profoundly hearing-impaired children, Kindergarten
through 8th grade, with an auditory-oral education. The school is organized similar
to a mainstream elementary school. Students are grouped according to their
abilities. The combination of school classes and daily speech therapy gives
children an expanding base of language on which communication and learning can
build. SJI maintains a student/teacher ratio of approximately 4:1 with a full
complement of academic subjects taught by trained educators of the deaf. Subjects
include:

  • Academic classes
  • Intensive language
  • Individual speech therapy or speech instruction
  • Computer center
  • Science
  • Fine arts
  • Accelerated reading
  • Physical Education

Expectations

Teachers set high expectations for their students and do everything possible to help children achieve their potential. Students are tested regularly to ensure that language acquisition progresses at an appropriate rate and that the students are becoming effective communicators. Parents receive the same level of support. They are
asked to observe a full day of class each semester and have access to the
teachers as necessary.

Calendar

The school calendar extends from late August to early June. Evaluations and
admissions of new children are conducted throughout the year.
