Programs
St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf - Indianapolis (SJI-I) is Indiana's only formal auditory-oral program for deaf/hard-of-hearing children. Auditory-oral education focuses on oral language development by fostering listening skills, speech, and oral and written language, without the use of sign language. SJI-I offers early intervention services for children birth to age three and operates a full-day kindergarten and preschool. We also provide support services to school-age children and consultation and training for other educators and professionals. The overall goal is to prepare deaf/hard-of-hearing children to attend their community schools, and to help assure that the programs and support services are in place to enable them to succeed in that environment.
