About Us
St.
Joseph Institute for the Deaf at Carle (SJIC) in Champaign-Urbana,
Illinois is a non-profit, private auditory oral school that provides
a comprehensive educational and therapeutic curriculum for children
from birth through age six who have a significant hearing loss.
St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf at Carle opened in 1997 with
support and financing from both St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf
and the Carle Development Foundation. SJIC provides an opportunity
for children with hearing loss to learn and develop spoken language
and listening skills. The school is one of two private auditory-oral
options for families in the state of Illinois.
St.
Joseph Institute at Carle is a collaborative effort between Carle's
ECHO program and St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf. The Carle ECHO
program is a multidisciplinary team of professionals who support
children with hearing loss and their families and assist in the
development of communication skills. This partnership allows children
to benefit from the experience of both Carle and St. Joseph Institute.
Most importantly, however, children receive the special services
they need, close to home.
